New Page and Updates

In case you haven’t noticed, I have added a new static page to this site. The Software page will be a starting point for a list of my favorite and recommended software. It won’t have any reviews, but it will be a general list of what I use and recommend. Reviews will come as I have time and energy for them.

If you are following along, you may have noticed that I have been pretty quiet for a few months. I have been in unemployment mode which tends to mean that I am spending most of my time combing through job sites, working on my “branding”, and trying to keep from going crazy being stuck at home.

I have a few post ideas that I will try to start working on and I hope that my new job will give me some good post ideas as well.

On the Android front… I am trying to get the SDK and development tools all setup on my 64-bit win7 box, but have run into issues. My intended updates to the CoffeaElectronica app are still pending; I may have to setup a virtual linux box or something to get a good environment setup again.

Also, the WordPress 3 upgrade tweaked my theme settings a bit and I have not been able to figure out how to get my sidebar panels to look right yet.

Text-based Task Shorthand

Ever since college I have used a quick format for simple transient task lists, like “stuff to do today”, or a simple way of tracking progress on a bug fix. All it requires is a text editor (or text edit field). Basically you just make a list of the tasks, one per line or just add an extra line between items if they take up more than one editor line. It’s best to keep it short though. The real trick is in the coded bullets prefixing each item. I will start out with an example:

/ post about my task shorthand
? discover meaning of life
- do laundry
    - find laundry detergent
x bathe
! feed the cat

As you can see in the example, sub-tasks are indented under their parent task. The legend for the bullet types is as follows:

? - there are questions about this item or more information is required.
- - this is just a standard task item
! - this is an important task item
/ - this item is pending other items or external activities
x - this item is done

It’s a simple system that works well for small short-lived lists of tasks. I thought I would share… maybe someone else will find it useful too.

Light Advertising

You may have noticed that I have added some advertising to this site. I had originally looked into putting AdSense ads on the site; however, after first rejecting me and then finally accepting me, I found that their ads are very ugly and their management tools are pretty sub-par. So I took a look at Amazon’s Affiliate program. The ads from Amazon are much more attractive and refined so they don’t really bring down the look of the page. Also, their management and creation tools are flexible and easy to use.

I have never really liked advertising in general and felt for a long time that I would never use it on any of my sites; however, financial pressure can sometimes influence such opinions. The ads I have implements are out-of-the-way, on the lower-end of the side bar and down in the footer so as not to detract from the site content. I will also use product links in posts when I refer to a book or something.

Lastly, I do get money when you purchase something through one of the links/ads on this site. Actually, I would get Amazon gift certificates… so, it’s really win-win for them. :-)

Thank you in advance for any purchases you make through my affiliations.

If you represent a company and would like to advertise on this site, please feel free to contact me, though be advised that I will be very picky about what ads I would accept.

If you have any comments and/or complaints, you are free to email me at ““.

Puzzle of the Jars and Pebbles

I had an interesting puzzle during a recent interview. I am paraphrasing this from memory so forgive me if you know this one and I am misquoting it somehow:

You have two types of pebbles, white and black, and three jars labeled white, black and black & white, respectively. One jar contains all white pebbles, one contains all black pebbles and one contains a mixture of black and white pebbles. The three jars a all mislabeled so that they will not contain the pebbles noted on the label. How many pebbles would you have to draw and from which jars in order to determine the true distribution?

Don’t read any farther if you are going to try and solve this one for yourself. The next paragraph contains the answer.

The answer is one, from the jar labeled “black & white”. If you got it on your first try through, congratulations, I did not. I figured it out on my second run through it.

Basically, you draw one pebble from the “black & white” jar. Say you draw a white one, you then know that the jar labeled “black & white” is the jar containing the white pebbles. This leaves you with two unknown jars, one labeled “white” and one labeled “black”. Since you know that both of these are incorrect and you have a white pebble, you know that the jar labeled “white” contains the black pebbles and the one labeled “black” contains the black and white pebble mixture.

It’s an interesting problem, but honestly I have never felt that these sorts of problems are useful in a technical interview. We would usually have one question of this nature in our interviews more to see how they would go about solving it than looking for an actual answer. Google apparently loves this type of question in an interview, but asks very little of a technical nature.
